Massive Shoe is the third and most recent record for Way Dynamic, the solo project for Melbourne, Australia’s Dylan Young. Across the album’s eleven tracks Young explores minimalist folk-pop, art rock and baroque pop, all informed by his restless, playful creative spirit. Dylan writes everything, plays almost every instrument on his albums, and produces them himself alongside long-term collaborator Stefan Blair (Good Morning). He is part of a tight-knit Melbourne community, a chosen family of artists who all play in each other’s bands and record each other’s records. He is or has been a member of interconnected bands Good Morning, Cool Sounds and Snowy Band, and the live Way Dynamic band is often made up of various configurations of these long-term friends. Dylan has also drummed with US group Sylvie and Australian Aboriginal folk icon Kankawa Nagarra, among others. Since the release of Massive Shoe (via Melbourne indie Spoilsport Records), Way Dynamic’s praises have been sung by everyone from Djo and Charlie Heaton to Elton John and John Mayer to Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) and MJ Lenderman, who have both taken Way Dynamic on Australian tours. Katie raved about Massive Shoe single Miffed It on her Substack, calling it “my favourite song in a VERY long time”. 2026 is set to be busy for Way Dynamic with upcoming Australian tours with Black Country New Road and This is Lorelei.
