The songwriting partnership of Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg has faced serious challenges in recent years. Constant touring, a label split, creative frustrations, and an unhealthy attachment strained both their collaboration and their friendship—intensified by the turbulence of their late teens and early twenties. Eventually, they realized they needed to reconnect with their roots. Those roots lie in Atlanta, Georgia—among forests, DIY venues, punk communities, and Weinberg’s family basement—but also on the early internet. The band grew up on Tumblr and Reddit, in digital spaces that fostered real-world connections through concerts and shared passions. During the pandemic, they saw these spaces become commodified or disappear, leaving a void for genuine community. From that void, the Ugly Duckling Union was born.
