São Paulo-born Sessa has announced his Mexican Summer debut Estrela Acesa out June 24, 2022. On his sophomore project, whose title translates to Burning Star, multi-instrumentalist Sergio Sayeg reflects his deep reverence for the rich musical heritage of Brazil, with lush orchestrations that evoke the timeless works of Tom Jobim, melded with the vivid timbres of spiritual seekers like Alice Coltrane, his stories sung in Portuguese with the poetic directness of compatriot of the heart Leonard Cohen. With its indelible pulse, Estrela Acesa explores love both sensuous and divine amid the crushing reality of the present, finding heavenly pleasure within the darkness.

To coincide with the album’s announcement, Sessa has also released “Gostar do Mundo,” which translates to “Taste for the World.” The song pairs tropical bossa nova sway with dramatic strings and rhythmic accents that Sessa credits to the roots reggae influence of Johnny Clarke, accompanied by a mesmerizing multimedia video by Gabriel Rolim.

Estrela Acesa was recorded on the island of Ilhabela, situated just off the coast of São Paulo. Foregrounded is the nuanced interplay between Sessa and his core trio: featuring bassist Marcelo Cabral and percussionist / co-producer Biel Basile as well as the graceful vocals of his female backing choir (Ciça Góes, Ina, Paloma Mecozzi, Lau Ra), plus added percussion and flute. It is all elevated with the galaxial orchestration provided by Belarusian arranger Alex Chumak, and the New York-based Simon Hanes, making Estrela Acesa feel minimal and opulent; the spare songs gradually blossoming into a lush, fertile landscape, as articulated in the cover artwork by J. Nazario.

Estrela Acesa follows Sessa’s 2019 debut Grandeza, which Bandcamp named one of the Best Albums of the Year and The New Yorker praised as “an act of undressing…bearing the depths of a refreshingly eccentric imagination.” While Grandeza explored the corporeal pleasures and gentle drunkenness of being in love with hints of ascendant free jazz, Estrela Acesa gazes up to the heavens and ponders love both sensuous and spiritual, in the throes of its resultant hangover through stunning orchestrations that offer smooth transport and gentle transcendence.
