Ever since moving to Berlin in 2005, Bulgarian-born boom-pop sensation DENA (born Denitza Todorova) has been working on her signature sound, a unique brand of pop, R&B, 90s-inspired dance and hip-hop, and native Balkan beats. After her single "Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools", later released as an EP on Kitsuné, went viral in summer 2012, DENA has received praise from some of the biggest media in Europe and worldwide (e.g. Der Spiegel, Guardian, Dazed & Confused, Fader), as well as wowing audiences at SXSW, clubs and festivals around Europe and supporting bands such as Das Racist, Icona Pop, and The Whitest Boy Alive.
In 2014 she unleashed her debut album Flash, created together with producer and engineer Jonas Verwijnen, a collection of bass-heavy songs about the ever-increasing pace of human life in the digital era: Making sure the massive beats and chords she usually creates on her MPC and keyboards add a necessary lightness to Flash, DENA addresses various topics such as friendship, trust vs. disappointment, impossible love, or girl power.
Ever since the release of her first singles she has been touring internationally and playing showcases, festivals and headlining concerts around Europe. With Denitza Todorova's live band, featuring Robert Kretzschmar on drums and electronics and ex-The Whitest Boy Alive member Daniel Nentwig on keyboards, DENA preserves the core of her album production while adding up an organic and real time aspect to the music, enriching the live moment of performance.
Since the release of her debut Album in 2014 DENA has been travelling between Berlin, Los Angeles, Stockholm and New York and collaborating with musicians like Grammy nominated writer and producer Mocky, NY house band Midnight Magic, Canadian singer and writer AKUA and more, developing the sound and lyric to narrate her story.
In September 2016, after several recording sessions with Midnight Magic / Hercules And Love Affair members William Raposo and Morgan Wiley in their New York based studio, DENA released a 4 track EP "Trust". Its lead single "Lights, Camera, Action" was presented on Pitchfork and set the mood for this new exciting development in DENA's production and writing style.
Since 2016 she is a published by Domino Publishing in London, which has opened new perspectives for further songwriting collaborations and production possibilities.
DENA is currently putting the final touches on her second album, which besides her own production will include old and new collaborators and is being recorded and produced between London, Berlin and New York.
